History and Updates on the Gable Mansion
The Mansion was built in 1885 for Amos and Harvey Gable, two Yolo County pioneers and ranchers. The Victorian Italianate style mansion features 3 stories and a sweeping Victorian stairwell. The Gables had the home designed and built for them by Edward Carlton "Carl" Gilbert, the owner of "Gilbert & Sons", for the sum of $16,000. Today, after extensive restoration and renovation, this mansion is California State Landmark #864 and represents a fine example of 19th century Victorian architecture. Within the Mansion, the kitchen and butler's pantry were designed to blend into the period decor but still offer state-of-the-art appliances and storage. Kitchen designer Chris Dreith of Home Improvements Group said that since the kitchen can now be seen from the front parlors, the cherry and mahogany cabinets were built to hide appliances and to look like fine furniture. The home is full of unique and fascinating items, but very beautiful is the antique glass ceiling over the islands in the kitchen. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to see the fabulous structure as well as the stained glass window on the third floor. The owner, Starr Barrow, made it herself!
